HOMELESS & CAMPING? YOU CAN’T ESCAPE CONSUMERISM

You can listen to Alan’s Natural Mind – Waking Up topic on Consumerism above while reading this post!

According to the society I live in, I am technically homeless (as I don’t have the standard house or apartment that most people do, I am not free of the consumer society, unlike my dog Hari!

Here’s why!

I currenly am living in a small tent, in a campsite on the Isle of Arran in Scotland, but I’m no wild man of the jungle!

First, I have access to hot showers, a drying room, washing machine, and dryer, washing up facilities etc etc…

I thought it woud be good to make a list of what I am carrying in my backpack and try to analyse the supply chain, and resources reuireed that have enabled me to be ‘Homeless’!

I also buy prepacked, dried food, and supermarket food suh as bread, jam and biscuits…plus I go to the pub and drink beer…plus i still smoke the occassional cigarette!

so you see I’m still a huge consumer!

it doesn’t matter whether you live in a 5 bedroom mansion or a 2 man tent, there is no escaping consumer consumption!

SO …

Am I truly resilient, or am I, like everyone else, dependent on people manufacturing goods for me in faraway places?

What physical rsources were needed to create my products?

What human resources were required?

Are people suffering due to their working conditions?

Is the earth suffering, or other speicies suffering due to my choices?

How did the product get here ?

What packaging did it reqire?

How much oil has been used?

Am I benefiting a totalitarian state by my choices to be homeless and camp in the wild?

So many questions , but it is absolutley essential that we know the provenance of of our purchases, and the impact that those purchases are having on the human world, and the earth itself..

But for now , I am just going to enjoy my beer and sign off saying, I’m trying hard .

It may not be enough, but if another few billion prople went through this process, especially in the ‘developed’ world, we would start to see a clear picture of our consumption and waste.
