I AM NOT A NUMBER

You may or may not know the sixties televsion series ‘the prioner’ starring Patrick McGoohan, but you might remember the phrase ‘I am not a number, I am a free man’.

So, when I was walking this week with my labrador in the lake district with my labrador, hari, and saw all these sheep and lambs with numbers casually sprayed all over their coats, it reminded me of the tv series, and provoked the question, what does it truly mean to be free?

This is a question that most of us can’t answer… including me.

So let’s go into this together shall we?

The word ‘freedom’ is defined in the engish dictonary as;”the condition or right of being able or allowed to do, say, think, etc. whatever you want to, without being controlled or limited:”

Who gives you freedom? The government? The army? Your parents? Or, are you inherently free from birth?

Of course you are not free. You are not free to rest your head where you please. You are not free to roam the world without a ‘passport’. Every step of your life you require permission from a relevant authority.

So although I feel it is a great indignity to have a number painted on you, or a tag with a number through your ear, we are all numbers.

From my social security number to my passport number to my health card number.

I thought I lived a free life but I was sorely mistaken. But I shall never stop trying to extricate myseld from a number based human experience.

But to have freedom returned to us, and the rest of the species of the planet we have to decide to rid ourself of control mechanisms.

And I am not talking about anarchy, the anarchists all just seem like very angry people, a bit like the animal rights activists.

No, to uncover and unleash true freedom requires a complete shift in thinking and action on behalf of each one of us as individuals.

Let us begin the shift within ourselves, today, and show that truly ‘I am not a number.’
