WHICH ONE IS BETTER ADAPTED TO THE ENVIRONMENT?

As I was preparing to set out on a hike with my faithfull companion, Hari, the labrador this morning, I noticed how long it was taking me to get ready, given there was a chance of rain on the hills, it was just above freezing, and the path was potentially very muddy.

As we exited the tent, I said to hari that I wouldn´t be too long as I had to ´ǵet ready´. He looked at me, and said Í’m ready!’

He, of course, was completely ready the moment he got up, whereas I had to have a shower, brush my teeth, get my walking trousers on, and decide how many layers to wear.

I then had to make sure I had my waterproofs at the readyin case of rain, before pulling on my goretex boots.

Hari, on the other hand was fully kitted out for whatever the weather through at us, and needed no boots, base and mid layers, or waterproofs. He has a waterproof, windproof, and warm coat after all, and his little paws are perfectly adapted for mountain walking.

How weak am I? I thought to myself.

I am supposed to be the most intelligent species on the planet, with the most complex brain in the known universe, yet couldn’t go out into ‘nature’ without lots of man made equipment.

Weak. Weak. Weak.

I questioned who I would be without all the technology that had gone into keeping me ‘protected’ in the ‘environment’ and questioned why hari, who is of a lower species (allegedly) didn’t need any of this kit.

I made sure I had plenty of fresh water in my reservoir, but hari said he didn’t need any as he would find fresh water along the way!

How did he know what water was safe to drink? I certainly didn’t. And even with my water filtration sytem, I wouldn’t trust that it would get rid of all the bacteria and viruses that existed in the water.

This troubled me. How was that hari, a simple labrador with a small brain, not able to create marketing strategies, invent weapons of mass destruction, or cook a meal know more than I did?

How was he able to deftly stride over sharp rocks without destroying his paws?

How was he able to deal with foul weather without a north face goretex jacket?

I had to assume that despite all our technologicl progress, we , homo sapiens were an inferior species to my little labrador.

How can this be?

We have harnessed the elements, creted buikding materials, built houses, railways, motorways, electric cars, and eeven built rockets capable of going into space, but undernesth it all, we were a weak, vulnerable species, and would not survive any catastrophic planetary event without our technology.

I looked at Hari as he powered through a swampy bog, lapping at the muddy waters, and decided that although I held the lead of control, he was much better adapted to living on planet earth than I ever could hope to be.

Something to think about perhaps?
